Ocean Point Column: Activities have begun

Tue, 07/02/2024 - 2:15pm

Abby and Tim Mahoney have arrived and are busy preparing for what will be a very busy season of activities! Despite the fact that activities didn’t officially begin until Monday, July 1 Abby, Tim and their assistant Kate Lindley were kind enough to hold some of the kids weekly activities this past week, thank you. Prior to the Mahoneys’ arrival Kate was busy preparing the Casino for opening, thank you to her as well.

As I mentioned activities officially began on Monday, July 1 with adult pickleball from 9 to 11 a.m. and a presentation by Tom Cotter on antique cars at 7 that evening.

Along with our usual weekly activities, Holly Cleary and Kate Dawson are organizing an Ice Cream Social on Wednesday evening at 7 and the cost is $5 for ice cream with toppings and $7 for a brownie sundae.
Please come, have dessert after dinner and mingle with friends.

Please plan on attending a Town Hall Meeting Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Casino. President Paul Taylor will present all of the important projects and work that has occurred this past winter.

If you enjoy attending our Porch Parties then you really shouldn’t miss this one as the very popular local band Boogie2Shooz will be performing. The party is Friday, July 5 and begins at 5:30. Bring your beverage of choice and an appetizer to share.

The annual OP Horribles Parade steps off promptly at 9:30 a.m. from Grimes Cove. Our parade is such a time-treasured event that brings all of Ocean Point together for that special day. You may want to participate, join the band in providing spirited music or just sit back and enjoy all of the merriment; we hope to see you all there. Prizes, races and our first softball game of the season take place immediately
following the parade; it is without a doubt the busiest day here at the Point.

Lace up those running shoes for the OP 5k and Fun Run to be held on Sunday, July 7 beginning at 8 a.m. Register online or in person the day of the race.

The Rev. Wesley A Smith American Baptist Churches, USA (ret.), Harvey Cedars, New Jersey will conduct Sunday services at the Wilson Memorial Chapel on Sunday, July 7 beginning at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome.

Check the website for the schedule of activities and any updates or changes to the calendar.

At the time of my writing last week’s column I was not aware of the service information for our beloved resident Doreen Dun. Sadly Doreen passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. I have very fond memories of Doreen summering at Ocean Point with her family, as I’m sure many of you do too. Doreen was a woman of many talents and interests. She was active in many area organizations and very giving of her time. Doreen was an avid reader and could converse on any subject matter. Doreen loved to travel visiting many countries throughout her life but she especially loved returning to her family’s Scottish roots. Doreen had a love for writing and was given the opportunity to write for many non-profit organizations. If you had the opportunity to meet Doreen while out for a walk or at a gathering she was always so interested to hear about you and what was happening in your life, she was a very kind, caring and compassionate woman. Doreen loved spending time with her many friends and especially her loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Doreen was predeceased by her husband Jim; our condolences to her son Alec and wife Kelly, her daughter Catherine and husband Hugh Rapp port, and her grandchildren Malie, Liam, Julia, James and Linnea, her sister and brother- in- law Liz and Dick Colten and many nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held Friday, July 5 at 3 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Boothbay Harbor and can be viewed on the church’s YouTube channel. Donations may be made in her memory to the Boothbay Community Resource Council at www.crcboothbay.org, to MoveOn.org @ front.moveon.org or to the Biden Campaign @ joebiden.com.

A celebration of a life will be held for Leslie Whitehouse on Saturday, July 13 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Wilson Memorial Chapel with a reception to follow at the Ocean Point Casino.

It’s busy here at the Point for sure, have a great week and enjoy the beautiful weather.
