Ocean Point Column: Event thank-yous, upcoming schedules

Mon, 07/24/2023 - 3:15pm

It’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of July. Where did the month go?

Although the weather was not your usual July conditions most everyone agrees it’s just nice to be here at Ocean Point.

Many thanks to Ocean Pointer Dana Wilson, fundraising manager at Bigelow Lab and her colleague Dr. Rachael Sipler, marine biochemist for their very informative presentation last Monday evening at the Casino. Many turned out to hear of the interesting work being studied by Bigelow Lab in Marine Life and clean water.

Dana has graciously arranged for Ocean Point to visit Bigelow on Aug. 10. More information regarding the tour will be forthcoming as the date approaches.

Thank you to Donna Logan for once again organizing Ladies Bunco. I understand everyone had a great time!

Our Attic Treasure Sale was once again a huge success thanks to Ann Hussey Hogaboom and her committee of volunteers in planning the event. Volunteers included: Holly Hornor, Cookie Dana, Lynn Wilson, Patty Gardner, Liz Colton, Donna Logan and Bonnie Bennett.

Those who assisted the days of the sale setting up, breaking down and selling items were Fred Wilson, Sue Kern, Bonnie Bennett, Cheryl Leriche, Marcia Donald, Barb Yahn, Bev Holt, Bibbs Fowler, Pandora Milligan, Cindy Raposo, Carol and Lauren Palmer, Helene Cass, Carol May, Laurie Bent, Betsey Paige, Peter Gardner, Georgia Chambers, Ginny Rush, Bart Hornor, Dossie Boynton, Scott and Richard Hogaboom, Mary Ripley, Link Brown, Barb Klein, Moira Simonds, Lanny Whitehouse, Paul Taylor, Pat Landurand and Laurie Frazier.

The kids all gathered on the Raymond’s lawn Sunday evening for a movie night, thanks to the Raymond Family for hosting such a fun event.

Thank you as well to Liz Dawson for chairing the S’mores night at Grimes on Monday evening.

Unfortunately the Aquarium presentation planned for Monday, July 24 had to be cancelled but we hope to reschedule soon.

Our junior tennis team played a hard fought match against the BHYC last Wednesday losing 10-9. Players included Jack Kaler, Zach Arnpriester, Louis and Liam Raymond, and Kate Lindley. The next match will be Wednesday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at Juniper Point. Good luck team!

Upcoming events for the week of July 24 include: a presentation on lobstering by Owen Dawson on Tuesday, July 25 at 7 p.m. I’m sure he will be providing us with some interesting facts that we may not be aware of regarding catching lobsters. Kathy Lindley is hosting the Ladies Porch Party on Wednesday, July 26 at 5:30; please bring an appetizer to share and your favorite beverage. Please plan to attend a mini course given by the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service on Friday morning from 9-10:30 at the Casino. This is such an important piece of information for all of us to learn or even to revisit.

Our third annual Cornhole Tournament will be held on Saturday, July 29 at 5 p.m. in the ball field and is hosted by Mark and Cara Pond. Bring your boards if you have them, your favorite beverage and enjoy an evening of fun and competition. Sign up is at the Casino.

John Zavodny, President and Douglas Cornman, chaplain of Maine Seacoast Mission will conduct Sunday Services at Wilson Memorial Chapel on July 30 at 9:30 a.m. The renowned duo Castlebay will lead the music and in celebration of the Maine Seacoast Mission’s 100th summer visiting Ocean Point they are sailing their vessel Sunbeam V to Ocean Point and will be moored at Card Cove. The Sunbeam provides spiritual, health and youth programs to Maine’s island communities. Refreshments and a tour of the Sunbeam will take place following the Sunday Service; all are welcome to attend.

I must end this week on a sad note; Connie Saindon passed away peacefully on June 5. Connie was a beloved resident of the Ocean Point community for a number of years. Connie was born in Boothbay Harbor, raised in Brunswick and resided in California. Connie had a successful career as a Marriage and Family Therapist and was also an accomplished writer. She received the Independent Book Publishers Benjamin Franklin’s Best in Self Help Award for her book, “Murder Survivors Handbook,” real-life stories, tips, and resources and contributing author of “Violent Death, Resilience and Intervention Beyond the Crises.” Connie enjoyed walking along the shoreline, cooking, photography and attending Maine State Theatre. Our condolences to Connie’s children Catherine and husband Andrew and son Christopher and partner Joe Rosso, her siblings and many nieces and nephews.

Looks like a great week ahead weather wise, enjoy and have a great week!
