Ocean Point Column: Presentations, porch parties and more

Tue, 08/01/2023 - 8:00am

Summer has finally arrived! We are currently experiencing a great stretch of weather; let’s hope it continues as we welcome our August vacationers.

Once again it was a very busy week here at the Point. Many thanks to Owen Dawson on his incredible lobster presentation last Tuesday evening. Unfortunately I was not able to attend however many did and commented on how informative and educational it was.

Kathy Lindley hosted a lovely Ladies Porch Party on Wednesday evening, many thanks to her; she and Matt will be hosting the second of our Porch Parties this Saturday evening so be sure to mark your calendar.

Thank you to the BRAS for taking the time to come to Ocean Point and instruct us on CPR and thanks to Jeff Slayton who coordinated this effort.

What a great turnout for the third annual Cornhole Tournament on Saturday evening. Twenty teams battled it out on the ball field despite the threat of rain. Competition was tough and in the end Liz Dawson and return champion Matt Birmingham prevailed as the winners. Taking second place was Barb Slayton and Neal Anderson. Congratulations to all and a huge thanks to the Ponds and the Driscolls for organizing what has become quite a popular event.

Unfortunately, the arrival of the Maine Seacoast Mission and their vessel Sunbeam V had to be cancelled last Sunday. Ocean Pointer Rev. Charles Carrick stepped in to conduct the Sunday service. The Maine Seacoast Mission hopes to return next summer.

Team Rush defeated Team Dawson 9-1. Jim Tracy pitched for the winning team. Kyle Rush hit a 3-run homer.

This week’s events include Kids Right, Left, Center on Tuesday evening at 7 and an adult version will take place on Wednesday evening at 8 and both are hosted by Ginna Yerrall. Kids Lawn Games will be held at the Raymonds’ home on Thursday evening at 5.

Break out your best recipe to bring to our second Food Sale on Friday, Aug. 4 beginning at 9:30 a.m. and chaired by Ginna Yerrall and Barb Slayton. Bring your items to the Casino by 9; stay and enjoy coffee, donuts, good conversation and always a great raffle. One of the best perks of this event is that you usually find some yummy items to bring home for the weekend.

Save your appetites for the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning, Aug. 5 from 8:30 to 10. Come enjoy delicious pancakes and sausage served up by Mike and Mary Rush.

As previously mentioned the second Porch Party will be held that same evening beginning at 5:30. Bring an appetizer to share and your beverage of choice.

The Rev. Donna Fonner, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ret.), Eleva, Wisconsin will conduct Sunday Services at the Wilson Chapel on Aug. 6 beginning at 9:30; all are welcome!

We are so fortunate to have Dottie Yunger, head of educational programs at the Aquarium coming to the Casino on Monday morning, Aug. 7 to speak. Her presentation will begin at 10:30. You may recall Dottie was scheduled to come July 24 but unfortunately she had to postpone her visit. Lucky for us she was able to reschedule. All are welcome to attend in what I’m sure will be a very informative and interesting program.

We all received some very exciting news this week regarding our Acoustics Fundraising Drive; thanks to many generous people in our community we have reached our goal and in record time! Paul Taylor led the successful drive, many thanks to him for all his effort.

A few reminders regarding racquet sports; appropriate tennis shoes are required on the Har Tru courts, sign up online to reserve pickleball and tennis courts and please see Abby, Tim or Isabel to pay your guest fee if you are not a current member.

See the bulletin board at the Casino for any updates to the activities schedule.

Have a great week!
