Seahawks overwhelm Mt. View in 8-man football
The Mt. View Mustangs and Boothbay Seahawks entered week four of Maine's Small Conference 8-man football league both in search of their first victories. It didn't take long before Boothbay emerged from the winless ranks to grab a 70-0 victory at Sherman Field.
Boothbay scored touchdowns on its first three plays from scrimmage. Boothbay scored after stopping Mt. View's initial drive by stopping its first rush for a six-yard loss followed by a rush for no gain another three-yard loss. On fourth down, the Mustangs botched the long snap in punt formation and Boothbay took over on its own 19.
From there, Maddox Cusumano ran 19 yards for a touchdown. On the Seahawks' next two offensive snaps, they also ran untouched for touchdowns. Kyle Canada ran 25 yards for his first touchdown. And midway through the first quarter, Boothbay extended its lead to 24-0 on a Tyson French 17-yard touchdown run.
Mt. View of Thorndike drops to 0-4 and now has been outscored 254-0 this season. The Mustangs' roster tells a big part of the story for their struggles. Of the 17 players, eight are sophomores, eight are freshmen and one is a junior.
Boothbay coach Ed Crocker served a one-game suspension for his Sept. 20 ejection against Sacopee Valley. Following the game, Crocker believes his team is learning from its early season struggles and should be one of the four southern conference playoff teams in October.
"We played some good teams in the early part of our schedule, but I think we match up well against Ellsworth and Sacopee," he said. "Our next opponent is Telstar, and I think we match up well against them, too. I don't see why we can't finish with four or five wins this season."
Boothbay is now 1-3. Boothbay hosts Telstar of Bethel at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Sherman Field. The Rebels are 1-3. Telstar beat Mt. View, 40-0, on Sept. 7.
