UPDATED: Southport considers third grant for Hendricks Beach climate project
The Southport Climate Action Team is considering a third grant for making Hendricks Head Beach more resilient to climate change. The team received a $50,000 Maine Infrastructure Adaptation Fund grant and a $10,000 grant from Island Institute. On Aug. 28, Shri Verrill, the service provider to the Southport Climate Action Team, told selectmen about plans for a third. The team wants to apply for a Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program grant, but needs a long term protection on any wetlands that are proposed to be restored or enhanced using MNRCP funds. Boothbay Region Land Trust has been responsive and willing to have conversations with the town and landowners to explore conservation options.
“We’d like to apply next week, but the time frame is too tight to make it work this time around. We need more time for everyone to get on the same page. There is always next year,” she said.
In other action, selectmen received correspondence from Consolidated Communications regarding placement of a “half-dozen” veterans’ banners on its poles. Consolidated wants to move these banners to a more convenient location. Selectman Gerry Gamage agreed to contact Consolidated Communications on the board’s behalf.
Selectmen approved two town hall rental requests. John Nunan received approval for a Sept. 28 birthday party. Hannah Joule received approval for an Oct. 19 birthday party.
Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 in the town hall.
