Seahawks upset Spruce Mountain, 3-2
A back-and-forth game ended with a second straight victory for the Boothbay Region High School field hockey team, as they held off the Spruce Mountain Phoenix in the final quarter to win, 3-2, in Jay on Oct. 9.
The victory improved Boothbay’s record to 4-5 while the Phoenix fell to 7-4. Going into the game, Boothbay was in eighth place in Class C South while Spruce Mountain was in third place. The Seahawks’ win boosted their seeding to sixth place in the division.
BRHS senior Magen Burge had the first goal of the game in the first quarter off of a corner, assisted by Zuri Smith.
Spruce Mountain tied the game in the second quarter.
“Going into the second half, we knew the result we wanted but there were a lot of little things that needed to be executed and a lot of hard work that needed to be put in to reach that result,” said Seahawk coach Jax van der Veen in an email on Thursday.
Moriah Smith had the third goal of the game off of a corner for a 2-1 lead. The assist was credited to Zuri Smith.
Spruce Mountain answered with a goal to tie the game again, 2-2, in the third quarter.
“We went into the final quarter with a good mentality -- no one beats us to the ball and to focus on our fundamentals and keep our heads in the game and take it play by play,” said van der Veen.
Zuri Smith had the Seahawks’ game winning goal in the fourth quarter.
“The other team started to scramble but the girls held it together and focused on playing our game and playing smart.
“Overall, it was a great team win. We have a lot of games coming up and really want to keep this success and this progression of our game going in the back half of our season. Abbie Clarke and Arabella Hodgdon shut down their best player and kept us in the game with their defensive efforts. Ivory Cody had an amazing game in goal as well.”
