Boothbay Fire Station open house draws a big crowd

The Boothbay Fire Department hosted its annual open house on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to massive crowds of kids and their families.

Kids ran through the EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) trainer, learned about using a fire hose, and got to explore the fire trucks and ambulance. Fire Chief Dick Spofford met the kids and handed out plastic fire hats, stickers and activity kits, and encouraged people to sign up for the door prizes, which were brand-new smoke alarms.

“We’ve been doing this roughly 15 years, maybe more,” Spofford said. “It’s a real community event and people get involved, like the junior firefighters who are helping out with Smoky the Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog.”

Sparky and Smoky were wandering around offering hugs and high-fives to eager kids.

Members of Bay View Lodge 196 were on-hand running concessions.
