On Saturday, Aug. 3, Dr. Barclay Shepard, family members and Boothbay Harbor town officials gathered to present Barclay, 98, with the Boston Post Cane, given to the oldest town resident. Barclay was pleasantly surprised when he arrived at his son and daughter-in-law’s home and saw everyone there.

Representing the town was Selectman Chair Mike Tomko, Selectman Vice-Chair Ken Rayle, Town Manager Julia Latter, Town Clerk Michelle Farnham, Officer Larry Brown, and Boston Cane Curator Grace Campbell. Barclay, a 1950 graduate of Bowdoin College, was quite happy, when he learned Grace also attends Bowdoin College and is a history major.

The numerous Shepard family members, included Barclay’s children, grandchildren, and great-children. Smiles sprung as Mike Tomko started the presentation by mentioning Barclay’s outstanding military career.

Mention was made of Barclay’s many contributions to Boothbay Harbor and the entire community, which include The Woodchucks, a group who prepare and provide firewood to local residents free of charge; a founding member of the Community Resource Council and for many years a board member for Lincoln Arts.
